I had reached the point where I was desperate and decided to try a topper. So I searched the internet and spent tons of time and money trying to get one that looked right. None of them “harmonized” with my hair. They either didn’t match in color, weren’t the right density (code for how thick the hair is), weren’t the right length, or a long list of other things made them just not a good purchase.
Out of the box, they came smashed flat and lifeless with absolutely no instructions. There was a lot I needed to learn. How to air fluff them to give them bounce. How to part them (once I figured out you could change the part). I even wore one backwards for several days before I learned which was the front. How embarassing! Then they needed to be trimmed and curled. This is just to get it on my head (after figuring out how the clips work). Also they came with no clues on how to take care of a topper. I didn’t know how to store it, or how to wash and style it – it was such a lonely process that felt completely wrong.
It was so frustrating that I did some research and found a salon several states away that specializes in toppers. I bought a plane ticket and went in person because the toppers were expensive and I wanted to make sure that I had the right match.
While I loved the topper I purchased, I didn’t love that experience. I was very nervous, and feeling scared. When I arrived at the salon, I was just another customer to the stylist who helped me. She was in a big hurry, and I felt rushed. As I left, I said to myself, “wow – what a great product, but crappy service.”
