Doctor’s Prescription
Do you have a medical condition that is causing your hair loss? If so, you may be eligible for a reimbursement from your current health insurance provider. Part or all of the cost of your hair topper may be covered as a cranial prosthesis. Coverage varies from company to company, based on your provider and your specific plan.
A cranial prosthesis is an external device used to cover all or part of the head; specifically, areas of hair loss or baldness – either temporary or permanent. Since a human hair topper serves this purpose by covering areas of hair loss on the scalp, it falls under the category of cranial prosthesis.

Contact your benefits department for your health insurance and ask:
- Is a cranial prosthesis covered?
- If so, how much of the cost will they cover?
- What information / medical procedure code is required on the prescription?
- What information / medical code is required on the receipt for payment approval?
If your provider will cover a human hair topper as a cranial prosthesis, contact your doctor and have them write a prescription.
- It is important that the prescription uses the appropriate medical procedure code you received from your health insurance provider.
- It doesn’t hurt to have your doctor write a letter to your insurance company explaining that your prosthesis is not for cosmetic reasons, but for your emotional well-being.
